Introduction to modelling of materials processing and behaviour in OpenFOAM®

OpenFOAM® (Open source Field Operation And Manipulation) is a free, open source computational toolbox that has a large user base across most areas of engineering and science, both at industry and academy. As a technology, OpenFOAM® provides an extensive range of features to solve anything from complex fluid flows involving chemical reactions, turbulence and heat transfer, to solid dynamics and electromagnetics, among several others.

This course comprises a general introduction to the structure and usability of OpenFOAM®, covering all the major phases of a typical computational case study. The resolution of problem involving heat transfer, fluid flow and solid mechanics will be illustrated in different case studies.

It is a hands-on course, thus, the participants can bring their own laptop to perform the proposed assignments.

Preliminary Programme (April 3rd):

9:10 – 11:00 – Introduction to OpenFOAM: Pre-processing

11:00 – 11:20 – Coffee-break

11:20 – 12:40 – Introduction to OpenFOAM: Simulation and Post Processing

12:40 – 14:00 – Lunch break

14:00 – 15:50 – Hands-on: Multiphase flow

15:50 – 16:10 – Coffee-break

16:10 – 17:50 – Hands-on: Structural mechanics and thermal residual stresses

Full Papers

Following an agreement established between SPM (Sociedade Portuguesa de Materiais) and MDPI, all authors are invited to prepare and submit their work to the following special issue of Materials (https://www.mdpi.com/journal/materials), an open access journal that currently has an impact factor of 3.74:

MATERIAIS 2023, XXI Congresso da Sociedade Portuguesa de Materiais and XII International Symposium on Materials

https://www.mdpi.com/journal/materials/special_issues/GS5H2EP6U5

All submissions will be subject to the normal peer review process and, if accepted, will receive a discount on the article process charges (APC). Please contact the Guest Editors (Dr. Maria da Conceição Paiva: mcpaiva@dep.uminho.pt or Prof. Dr José Covas: jcovas@dep.uminho.pt) if authors want to get more discount details.

Submission to the special issue of Materiais 2023 can be made from April 10th to September 10th, 2023. The submission website for this journal is located at: https://susy.mdpi.com/user/manuscripts/upload?form[journal_id]=14. Before preparing your manuscript, please see the instructions for authors at: https://www.mdpi.com/journal/materials/instructions.

To ensure that all manuscripts are correctly identified, it is important that authors select the special issue “MATERIAIS 2023, XXI Congresso da Sociedade Portuguesa de Materiais and XII International Symposium on Materials” when they reach the “Article Type” step in the submission process. All submitted papers will be checked by the journal office and published online after peer review.

MATERIAIS 2023 aims at continuing the successful series of MATERIAIS congresses promoted by the Portuguese Materials Society (SPM) initiated in 1983. This edition, the XXI Congresso da Sociedade Portuguesa de Materiais – MATERIAIS 2023, and the XII International Materials Symposium, will take place in Guimarães, Portugal, from 3 to 6 April 2023.

MATERIAIS congresses are one of the most effective and important discussion fora on Materials Science and Engineering in Portugal. MATERIAIS 2023 aims at discussing the most recent scientific and technological advances in Materials Science and Engineering within the general agenda of contributing to Sustainability for a Future. A special emphasis will be given to the following topics:

Centro Cultural Vila Flor – Guimarães
Av. D. Afonso Henriques, 701 | Guimarães

The Vila Flor Cultural Center (CCVF) is a cultural facility, whose mission is to co-create, program and produce cultural activities in the field of the performing arts. It comprises two auditoriums, a Café Concerto, and Palácio Vila Flor, an 18th century building and its magnificent gardens.

Guimarães is considered the birthplace of Portugal because Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, was born here. The historical centre in the area that was within the Guimarães city walls was classified a World Heritage site based on the originality and authenticity applied in its restoration. The city maintains a well-preserved heritage that is evident in the graceful iron verandas, granite balconies and porticos, mansions, arches connecting the narrow streets, paving slabs smoothed by time, towers and cloisters.
